I believe hygge is a type of magic, revealing itself to us, saying “Hey, here I am! Doesn’t this magic shit feel great?!” Being magic, hygge is natural and hygge is for everyone. Hygge is not about things or about our possessions, it’s not about being a minimalist or a maximalist. Hygge is whatever feels comfortable, soothing and magical to you!
You might ask why am using the Danish word “hygge” ? Well we don’t have a word that really conjures up as many different feelings in English, “cosy” doesn’t cut it, nor does “pleasure.” I also like the alliteration of “Hygge Highlights” that’s fairly obvious. I think hygge is a great word to adopt and it’s not like we haven’t adopted other foreign words that make us feel good… Voilà! Bon appétit! Bouquet, blouse, concierge, lingerie, magnificent… for some commonly used French examples. How about “Wanderlust” another adopted word, of German origin that has gained popularity in the last decade or so.
Here are some of your “Hygge Highlights” that you kindly shared with me since last Sunday’s roundup.
“The pale Winter sun peaked from behind the clouds for a few short but beautiful minutes.” / “Pumpkin soup and reading.” / “Dumplings, so very good, on a wet drizzly work night.” / “Looking forward to hibernating with the fire on over the next few days.” / “Pottering between our warm art studios, listening to audio books and creating, experimenting.” / “Glueing the almonds back on with meringue.” / “A quiet night, watching a movie with a cheese and salami Super Gourmet special.” / “I intentionally cooked it ever so slightly less, and it looked and tasted like the most perfectly moist friand.”
Lots of food hygge highlights this week, which I absolutely welcome and fully understand. It was indeed grand to have a little bit of sun return after some very wet and grey days too, fingers crossed for more of that. There was another highlight shared which I thought was beautifully poignant…
“Being content with enough.” - I do realise that experiencing hygge comes with a certain amount of privilege, of safety in the very least, if not so much about wealth after our basics are covered. If you are in an unfortunate position with high levels of stress, emotional and, or physical harm; obviously it’s extremely difficult to see magic and feel good. There is also privilege in recognising “enough” in a world with a crisis of inequality, many being starved of food, shelter, love and worth unnecessarily, and then those clearly hoarding way more than “enough.” This is where I think we can help each other some, firstly if your basics are not being covered… let’s talk! Secondly, studies show by regularly practising different forms of gratitude you increase both dopamine and serotonin, the feel good hormones. Therefore by fostering a community, creating a group of gratitude junkies high on hygge, I believe we can unlock more of this happiness stuff and create more magic shit!
Here are my Hygge Highlights from this week…
Finding some embers still glowing in the wood burner one morning and therefore not having to start the fire from scratch.
Waking from a most delicious night’s sleep, when they are few and far between you *really* appreciate a good'n.
A spicy glass of dark Ink Shiraz paired with vegetarian lasagna hit all the right comfy notes Friday evening, perhaps that's why I slept so well.
Taking a sage and rosemary herbal infused warm foot bath, rather relaxing and relieving when you’re having to constantly wear footwear because of the cold.
And finally, reading the hygge highlights you shared, lots of warm fuzzies. Thank you all so much! xx
Don’t forget to hit me with more of your magical moments later again this week and feel free to share some photos too, especially if you would like to see less of my old trotters!
Have a fantastic hygge filled week everyone.
Seasons Blessings 💫

Good Lord why have I gone so long without a foot bath?? Thank you for the beautiful reminder x
That feeling when embers are still glowing and you can kindle a blazing new fire - it’s probably more efficient to just light a new fire but it’s not as much fun 😊
