I wonder if you will indulge me of a little more chatter around the Japanese philosophy of 72 microseasons? I’ve been thinking about it a lot.
To me the descriptions are whimsically magical. I can see them as the essence of what is good in a moment. I can feel them as familiar cosy hug returning. I can sense a nourishment for my soul. As I read them, why I can feel them as “Hygge!”
It got me thinking further, how would I describe my current microseason? How would you? My last few days I could honestly be described as “hours of heaviness in hormonal headaches.” Not essentially good or particularly hygge I confess. “Sleep has not been easy” could be another, yet again not so magical. I must dig deeper.
I was darn close to a hygge hiatus tonight. Not short on ideas, indeed several are bubbling away. It’s more a case of the black crow on my shoulder, which can visit unannounced and without invitation. Somehow it works out what it perceives to be an opportune time, perhaps it can sense the hormonal imbalance?
Words are healing. If to write, as much as reading. I think writing is more so, at least for me. Tonight this hygge is selfishly for me. It’s the cosy hug I need.
Thinking about the 24 divisions of the lunisolar year while scrolling instagram led to finding an artist who had tagged some of her posts with #72microseasons Her simple yet jolly watercolours were another welcome hug. She also has a penchant for a wee dram of Scotch, I smiled, “another source of hygge.”
Then I remembered a heartwarming moment I captured during the week.
“First dragonfly is spotted, lured by the sweet and sticky Yoshino bud about to blossom.”
"Hygge Highlights"a weekly roundup of moments we have experienced that felt especially cosy or magical in some way. Some generously shared by you through comments and chats. I also share small moments of my week which gave me a sense delight and wonder.
While sometimes our hygge moments are uniquely seasonal, they needn’t be. Hygge is the essence of what feels good at any time, in any season, not only Wintery hot chocolates or warm fluffy socks. I welcome you to slow down, breathe in nature and share what you observe in this stillness. These are magical moments no matter where in the world you are, no matter the season, no matter the weather.
If you enjoyed receiving this Sunday’s edition please do consider joining in with your own magical moments by leaving a comment or sharing the post with others. Hearing from you really means a lot to me and I love hearing about your seasonal observations, the delights you’ve seen, tasted or felt inspired by.
Seasons Blessings 💫

I’m left wondering about this question “how would I describe my current microseason?” I am feeling calm and grounded after spending so much time by the sea these last few months. But I’m also starting to feel a sense of busier days ahead as I transition into new season, and about to start a new creative project.
The last few days I've been visiting my parents who live in a small mountain town in Northern New Mexico, and I would describe the current microseason there as something along the lines of "the week when New Mexico behaves like Newfoundland." The fog was so unreal and so unusual. I love this question, Bron! It would be so fun to chart our own microseasons for a few years and watch how they change.
